Stage 2 of the Fernleigh Track Offiically Opened
15 July 2005
Lake Macquarie City Council recently completed stage 2 of the Fernleigh Track. The official opening was held (in rain) on Saturday 7 May 2005.
The constructed track now extends 5.5km from Adamstown, south to Whitebridge. More details of the rail trail are here
Total cost so far is approx $3.5m, including the tunnel restoration. The NSW state government has provided aproximately 50% of the cost from cycleway grants, with the two councils providing 25% each.
Whilst the track is also used by commuter cyclists, recreational cycling and walking use, particularly at weekends, has been extremely high, and there have been some conflicts between cyclists & walkers. We have marked the centreline to encourage more considerate behaviour.
Planning has commenced for the next stage - only 10km to go!
Ian Broadfoot - Recreation and Land Planning Coordinator Lake Macquarie Council.
