Rail Trails of Victoria and South Australia Edition 3
If you have the second edition of the guide (original 2001, reprint 2003), we have put together this page to
help you decide if it is worth getting the third edition.
What's new in Edition 3?
Four new Victorian rail trails:
- Sandridge Railway Trail - Melbourne to Port Melbourne (4.5km)
- Gippsland Plains Rail Trail - Stratford to Maffra (7.5km) and Cowwarr to Glengarry (17km)
- Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail - Colquhoun to Lakes Entrance (17km trail plus 8km optional on-road link)
- The Domino Trail - Trentham (5km)
Nine extended rail trails:
- Great Southern Rail Trail (Vic) - describes the completion of the section from Stony Creek to Foster plus an additional 6km between Koonwarra and Meeniyan
- Bass Coast Rail Trail (Vic) - extension from Anderson to Woolamai (under development at the time of publication)
- Moe - Yallourn Rail Trail (Vic) - short extension to the Yallourn power station, finally completing this trail
- Tyers Junction Rail Trail (Vic) - new section between Telbit Crossing and Tyers Junction
- East Gippsland Rail Trail (Vic) - 36km extension from Nowa Nowa to Orbost
- High Country Rail Trail (Vic) - 4km extension back towards Wodonga, plus 16km Tallangatta section
(the Tallangatta section was included in the 2003 reprint, but not in the 2001 edition)
- Old Beechy Rail Trail (Vic) - now open from Colac to Beech Forest (with some on-road sections)
- Coast to Vines Rail Trail (SA) - rail-side extension from Hallett Cove to Marino, plus various improvements
to existing sections
- Westside Bikeway (SA) - extension from Richmond to Mile End
Other changes include:
- Crater to Coast Rail Trail - describes the major upgrade taking place during 2007
- Great Divide Rail Trail - new map plus a description of an additional section at Jubilee Lake
- revisions and minor updates to most of the other trail descriptions and maps
- many new photographs (the majority of the photos in the book are new to this edition)
