Adelaide Hills Amy Gillett Rail Trail - Trail Description![]() Typical scenery south of Mt Torrens Railtrails Australia - 2006 Location: Mount Lofty ranges, 49km from Adelaide Start/end: Oakbank/Mount Pleasant Region: South Australia Length open: 5km ![]() DescriptionThis will be a very picturesque 32km long rail trail very near to Adelaide. On 23 January 2010 the first stage, which is the 5km Oakbank to Woodside section was officially opened. It has a sealed surface and is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. See news item below. It is named in memory of Amy Gillett, a South Australian bike rider killed in a training accident in Germany in 2005. The Friends of the Adelaide Hills Rail Trail was formed in 2007 to assist the development of the rail trail. Please refer to the link below for their details. The railway line from Balhannah to Mt Pleasant was opened in 1918 and closed in 1964. The former corridor between Balhannah and Oakbank has mostly returned to private landowners. News Items
