Description

This 37km rail trail from the Moyne River in Port Fairy through Koroit to Warrnambool is currently under construction. The first 18km from Port Fairy to Koroit is completed and rideable. The section from Koroit to Warrnambool is under construction and is planned to be completed by the end of 2010. The tunnel under the highway has been completed near Illowa, but is not open to ride until the trail is completed.

From Port Fairy the route will pass dairy farm landscapes before skirting the northern side of a 25,000 year old extinct volcano, now the Tower Hill State Game Reserve. The crater is home to many koalas, emus and wallabies and has a variety of walking tracks. The route then passes close to the Merri River wetlands and ends in Warrnambool (linking into the Warrnambool Foreshore Promenade).

Description updated July 2010

A circuit link can be made to the 22km long Mahogany Walk which follows the coast back to Port Fairy.

The trail construction is a joint project between the rail trail Committee of Management, the Moyne Shire Council and the Warrnambool City Council with major funding from the state and federal governments.
