Railway Reserves Heritage Trail - Trail Description![]() A rider is dwarfed by a large cutting on the trail Mike Maher Location: East of Perth, 19km from Perth Start/end: Midland to Wooloroo Region: Western Australia Length open: 82km Surface: Dirt ![]() DescriptionThis trail passes through the hills in Perth's outer suburban area. Part of the trail runs through John Forrest National Park, passing Hovea Falls and featuring the only former railway tunnel in the state. The area also features wineries and tea-rooms. The trail follows the routes of two former railways and is unique in providing a 40km loop entirely on railway formations. The first railway, the former Eastern Railway to York was opened in stages between 1884 and 1885. The line proved too steep, and a deviation via Parkerville was opened in 1896. The Mundaring (southern) route closed in 1954 and the main (northern) line closed in 1966 when a new route via the Avon Valley was opened. The former railway lines were converted to a rail trail in the 1980s. Some sections are sandy in places and signage is a little limited so keep a map handy. A breakdown of the section distances is:
The trail is managed by the Shire of Mundaring. From Mundaring to Wooroloo, the trail follows the route of "Golden Pipleine" - the 560km fresh water pipeline that runs from Mundaring Weir to Kalgoorlie. This section of the trail is also know as the Pipeline Trail and the Kep Track. This trail continues on to Northam as the Farming Heritage Trail. There is also a connecting 7km rail trail from Mundaring to Mundaring Weir that is the start of the Munda Biddi Trail. Trail Map![]() Copyright © Railtrails Australia.
