Features
A former Railway Bridge spanning the Parramatta River. The bridge links with shared pathways around Homebush and Shepherds Bays.
Description
The old Parramatta River Railway Bridge at Meadowbank (west of Sydney) has been converted for pedestrian/cycle use. This old bridge is situated next to the more modern railway bridge that crosses the Parramatta River between Rhodes and Meadowbank. It can be approached from Blaxland Rd Rhodes (southern side of the river) or Bank Street Meadowbank (on the north side of the river).
Background Information
The cast iron bridge was fabricated in England and erected in 1886. It carried trains until 1980 when a new parallel railway bridge was built. The old bridge was opened for pedestrian and cycle use in 2000.
The bridge links the Ryde district with Homebush Bay. It links with a 3 klm shared pathway around Homebush and Shepherds Bays. Signs should be in position to indicate this pathway.
The bridge is located between Rhodes and Meadowbank railway stations on the Northern line. It can also be reached by ferry from the nearby Meadowbank Wharf.
