The federal government has announced total funding of $512,281 to carry out improvements to 17 kilometres of gravel rail trail surface from Killara (near Wodonga) to Huon in north east Victoria.  It also includes the establishment of a 600 metre steel boardwalk across the Kiewa River floodplain at Killara, providing all-season access to Lake Hume and Tallangatta. The project will enable the region’s High Country Rail Trail to become a tourism destination of national significance, encouraging increased visitation and length of stay, and year-round access.

When the rails were removed long timber railway bridges across the Kiewa river flood plains were also removed.  As a result the rail trail is vulnerable to any flooding, causing closure of this section and significant surface damage.  The boardwalk will significantly reduce these issues.  The surface upgrade from the flood plains to Huon will bring the whole section of rail trail up to the same good standard being enjoyed between Huon and Victoria.

More detail on the funding arrangement and proponents can be found at the Regional Development Australia website.  While not mentioned we understand that Parklands Albury Wodonga and the City of Wodonga also played a part in wining this important funding.
