The Bicycle Network 2018 Great Victorian Bike Ride finished yesterday (Sunday 2nd December) in Benalla after starting 9 days earlier in Bright, with more than 3000 riders taking part.

Participants had the opportunity of using the Murray to Mountain Rail Trail and the High Country Rail Trail in their route.

The other major north east Victorian rail trail, the Great Victorian Rail Trail, was not part of the route but the Friends of the Great Victorian Rail Trail ensured they also had a presence.

The friends had a display at the last stop on Saturday at Glenrowan to spread the word of rail trails, using a equipment funded with the assistance or Rail Trails Australia's community grants program. Rail Trails Australia also helped on the day.

Glad Phillips Bridge Unveiling

On the way to Glenrowan our RTA committee person also found time to attend the unveiling at the Bonnie Doon bridge on the Great Victorian Rail Trail.

Glad was instrumental in leading a small committee of locals who worked to save the impressive railway bridge across Lake Eildon and convert it to a walking/riding bridge. They succeeded in 1999, and this 463m long bridge is now an iconic and essential feature of the 134km long Great Victorian Rail Trail which opened in 2012.

A fitting tribute to Glad's many contributions to the area.
