N34 309 Tumbarumba construction 2019 12 6101 web1The Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail is still on track to be completed in time for the official opening on Friday 3 April this year, despite the horrendous bush fires that raced through the district.

This is stage 1 of the Riverina Highlands Rail Trail on the southwestern slopes of NSW.

The rail trail corridor avoided direct impact from the fire but was affected by the installation of a fire-break around the Hyne Mill. Fortunately only minor remediation is required of the trail that was awaiting final preparation prior to sealing.

On Tuesday 28 January, Snowy Valley Councillors, Member for Albury Justin Clancy, and members of Tumbarumba to Rosewood steering Committee were informed on-site regarding progress and future directions of the rail trail. The construction team, despite losing a few weeks, are intent on completing the trail on time. They do stress, however, that future unfavourable weather and other factors may make the completion date difficult.

Substantial progress has been made on bridge restoration, with the contractors Timber Restoration Systems using three teams to work on the 4 timber bridges.

It is expected that fencing will be completed by the end of February. Grids and over/under passes will be completed as appropriate over the length of the trail.

Around 7 kilometres of trail has been sealed.

The Tumbarumba Historical Society, the Tumbarumba Men's Shed, Landcare organisations and community volunteers have continued to be active in preparing trail enhancements - historical signage and items, tree planting and care at Figures Street Tumbarumba, rebuilding of railway gates and construction of seats/tables for placement along the trail. When appropriate conditions allow, significant native vegetation replanting will take place over the whole length of the trail.

The steering committee and council construction team and are currently working on numerous items needed to make this a very successful and high standard rail trail.
