Sometimes it requires innovative ideas to achieve your objective - and this is certainly true of the currrent extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail (GSRT) in Victoria’s South Gippsland region.

Recently the Friends of the Bendigo Kilmore Rail Trail installed 'whistle post' style sign posts at road crossings along Victoria's O'Keefe Rail Trail, between Axedale and Heathcote.

On Monday 26 July, Wagga Wagga City Council (in NSW) will vote on a motion to give in-principle support for the development of rail trails in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. A successful vote will pave the way for a funding application to build the vital and long-awaited Wagga Wagga to Ladysmith Rail Trail, part of the Riverina Highlands Rail Trail.

Following a $6m grant from the Victorian Government to the Wellington and South Gippsland Shire Councils, the Great Southern Rail Trail in Victoria's Gippsland region will become a continuous off-road track from Nyora to Yarram.

The State Government has announced that a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians will be constructed over the Goodwood Railway Station on the Mike Turtur Bikeway at a cost of $28m.

A Castlemaine-Maryborough rail trail has taken one small step closer to its planning stage with a decision by the Mt Alexander Shire Council (MASC) last month to fund a small scoping study.

More good news from NSW with funding for construction of NSW's third major rail trail. Federal MP Hon. David Littleproud and NSW MP Hon. John Barilaro recently announced that up to $8,721,095 will be provided to revitalise the Great Northern Rail Line between Armidale and the Queensland border which has not had trains on it for 31 years.

To revitalise this asset and generate economic growth through increased tourism, Glen Innes Severn Council will build Stage 1 (35.5km) of the New England Rail Trail between Glen Innes and Ben Lomond.

The Richmond Valley Council received notice from the NSW state government to move the to Phase 2 (detailed design and construction) of the Casino to Bentley section (Stage 2) of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.

Following the successful rail trails forum in Tumbarumba in April 2021, another potential rail trail has just been added to the NSW list.

Wonderful news with the Tweed Shire Council approving construction on the first section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, NSW's second rail trail on a government rail corridor.

Rail Trails Australia is excited to share an update of the progress of the Great Southern Rail Trail Extension from Nyora to Leongatha as at May 2021.

The Mornington Community Safelink is a proposed Trail that will run alongside the Heritage Railway Line, from the end of Peninsula Link Trail, at Moorooduc Station, to the Mornington Station on the corner of Yuilles and Watts Roads, and into Main St Mornington.

The existing 22km Southern Flinders Rail Trail rail trail from Wilmington to Melrose is being extended by 17km from Melrose to Booleroo Centre. Work is progressing well with 5km having been levelled, compacted and topped with compacted fine gravel. Work on this section is expected to be completed by the end of June 2021.

After a $150,000 feasibility study last year, the Victoria's Baw Baw Shire has allocated $2.2 million to its 2021/22 draft budget extending the shared trail from Neerim to the Noojee trestle bridge. The 11km trail extension project will create a continuous link between the Rokeby Crossover Rail Trail and the Noojee Bridge to Noojee Station Rail Trail, a total distance of about 30km.

Rail Trails Australia participated in a cycle tourism presentation hosted by federal Parliamentary Friends of Cycling Today, a bipartisan group of Federal MPs who are riders and interested in cycling issues.
