Over the past decade the City of Mount Gambier in South Australia, with assistance from the State Government, has progressively transformed the unused rail corridor through the centre of the city into the 9.4km Mount Gambier Rail Trail and redeveloped the four-hectare railway station site into a parkland area.

With the support of the City of Mount Gambier, the Limestone Coast rail trail sub-committee and Tenison Woods College, the Community and students from the College commenced planting a 250-metre section of the rail trail with over 1300 locally native seedlings in August last year. Six months on, not only has flowering been observed, but also a high percentage of seedling survival, as reported by ecologists with Nature Glenelg Trust, who coordinated the project.

The planting will enhance the appearance of the rail trail as it matures but more importantly, it will provide significant benefits to the local wildlife. We are pleased to report that this project is a five year initiative with a further 450m planned for planting in 2021.

Thanks must go to Nature Glenelg Trust, a not-for-profit environmental organisation for its invaluable guidance and assistance on this project.
