Sometimes it requires innovative ideas to achieve your objective - and this is certainly true of the currrent extension of the Great Southern Rail Trail (GSRT) in Victoria’s South Gippsland region.

Before rail trail construction can commence, considerable planning takes place. To facilitate planning, engineers need to determine the scope of the work. To do this they need to inspect the rail corridor. In places, the old line can be overgrown and inaccessible.

This was certainly true for the GSRT’s extension from Leongatha back up to Koo Wee Rup. Planners looking at the Cranbourne East to Nyora corridor of the old Great Southern Railway are looking at the work required. Together with an old John Deere industrial mower affectionally caled the "Goat", they are hacking through the scrub on the site.

Hopefully this will ultimately lead to a continuous rail trail from Cranbourne East to Yarram.

This is a really interesting story --- you can read more about the "Goat" here.
