Paul Hoolihan MP, Member for Keppel announced that this year’s State Budget will provide $1.1 million for the first stage of a rail trail between Yeppoon and Bondoola, on Queensland's Capricorn Coast.

Mr Hoolihan said he had lobbied hard for the rail trail which will eventually extend 53km between Rockhampton and Yeppoon when complete.

“I have long lobbied the Treasurer for this much-needed walking and bike track and I’m ecstatic this funding had come through,” he said.

“This is fantastic news for the people of Keppel because it will provide a scenic recreation trail for locals to enjoy, attract tourists and provide a welcome boost for our local economy through creating local jobs."

Details are a little sketchy at this stage but it is envisaged that these funds will construct the first 6km stage of the rail trail, which apparently contains two large bridges, hence the limited distance for the amount of funding.

Rail Trails Australia will work with Mr Hoolihan and the Rockhampton Regional Council to help ensure the most appropriate standard of trail is constructed. We also acknowledge the continuous lobbying over many years by particularly the Capricorn Coast Bicycle Users Group.
