Guide Banner 4 2015

The only developed section of the Southern Flinders Rail Trail was from Gladstone to the southern end of Laura, following the alignment of the original narrow gauge railway that ran from Yacka in the south to Wilmington in the north.

Two new sections of this potentially fantastic rail trail have now been opened. The Wilmington section is celebrating with a Ride The Trail Day.

Laura to Stone Hut

The trail now continues from Laura at the northern end all the way to Stone Hut. The new 7.8 km section follows the original rail alignment beside Main North Road between the two towns. From the gently sloping trail you can enjoy scenic views of the Laura Golf Course, Beetaloo and some beautiful agricultural land.

Melrose to Wilmington.

This 22 km section is also open to the public. This is also part of the same railway which terminated at Wilmington and closed in 1988.

There will be a Rail Trail Ride day to celebrate the opening on 15 October 2011.

Registrations and entry fees are required and all profits will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

There will be a treasure hunt for the kids along the trail to entice them along. The temptation of lollies and chocolates should keep them from being bored!

The official opening of the trail will be held at Wilmington at 10:45 after which the ride event kicks off at 11:00 AM.

There will be a support vehicle to pick you and your bike up if you feel the need or if your bike decides on your behalf.

Enjoy a BBQ lunch and live entertainment at Paradise Square in the town of Melrose after the ride.

For more information about the event see http://otesports.com.au/ or phone the (08) 8666 2222.

So come on down to Wilmington on 15 October and have a great day on the trail!
