  • The first stage, a 3.5km spur from Logan Village to Yarrabilba, is now open.
  • This proposed 43km long rail trail would provide valuable recreational and commuting link for locals and a great attraction for visitors from Brisbane and beyond.

2023: City of Logan Council is proceeding with the Detailed Design of the 10.5km Bethania to Logan Village section of the corridor. Design is scheduled to be complete by November 2023.

June 2022: The Queensland State Government and the Logan Council have announced $7M joint funding to develop the Bethania to Logan Village section of the rail corridor. Community consultation is on-going.

In October 2022, Queensland Transport and Main Roads released a tender for the removal of approx 43kms of rail infrastructure between Bethania and Beaudesert.  The tender includes the removal of rail, sleepers, and “rail jewellery” including dog spikes, fishplates, and bolts.  Ballast, open level crossings and rail bridges are to be left in place.  The removal of this infrastructure is expected to pave the way for the construction of the rail trail along the length of the old railway to Beaudesert.

Last updated: 3 June 2023

The only section currently open is the 3.5km trail from Logan Village Green to Yarrabilba.

The 3.5km trail extends through native bushland and will link Logan Village Green to Buxton Park via Blossom Street in Yarrabilba.

The 2.5m wide asphalt pathway is designed for walking, jogging and hiking.

The trail is built on part of the de-commissioned Logan Village to Canungra spur line which is now a Logan City Council-managed road reserve.

It crosses the Waterford-Tamborine Road at the intersection with Anzac Avenue to provide a dedicated off-street connection along Logan Street to the Village Green.

The trail features a watercourse crossing, flood mitigation, access-control bollards and wayfinding and custom-designed entry signage.

The repurposed ironwork on the entry signs features designs originally crafted by local blacksmith Alan Ball for the old bandstand at the Logan Village Green.

Other parts of the ironwork include designs by local artists that reference the original train line, river barges, a nearby former WWII army base and local fauna and flora.

Background Information

Community lobbying for the rail trail has been going on since 2009.

The Beaudesert to Bethania Rail Trail Support Group was formed in early 2009 to gather community, local government and state government support for this proposal. Several well attended meetings were held and a Business Case was prepared highlighting many benefits.

However, Logan City Council subsequently chose not to sub-lease the disused rail corridor to enable the trail to be established.

In 2019, Logan City Council sought and received State Government Rail Trail Local Government Grants (RTLGG) program funding for the feasibility and design of a 3.2 km shared recreation trail from Logan Village to Yarrabilba along the disused Canungra Spur Line.

In 2019 a Friends of the Trail group, initiated meetings with Logan City Council and Transport & Main Roads (Qld) then submitted a proposal to Logan City Council for a 10.5 km Rail Trail from Bethania Station to Logan Village along the northern section of the disused 34 km Bethania to Beaudesert Rail corridor. Logan City Council also obtained funding under the RTLGG program to fund the feasibility and design of the 10.5 km Rail Trail from Bethania Station to Logan Village along the northern section of the disused Bethania to Beaudesert rail corridor.

In June 2022 The Queensland State Government and the Logan Council announced $7M joint funding to develop the Bethania to Logan Village section of the rail corridor to open up many recreation and commuting opportunities for locals and visitors. Community consultation is on-going.

The railway from Bethania Junction to Beaudesert was fully opened in 1885. Queensland Rail closed the line in 1996. Several other lines were constructed off this line, including one to Canungra which served Camp Cable during WWII. However these closed in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Click here for an extract from the Yarrabilba Bulletin (Feb 2020 edition, back page) relating to the history of the Canungra Spur line.
