Timber tramways were lightly constructed railways used for logging. Much narrower than a regular railtrail, trails along former tramways are ideal for bushwalking. Two such tramway trails in the Mansfield area are Mt Samaria and the Plain Creek Track.

With the water levels in Lake Eildon so low and the Brankeet Arm of the lake empty, a rather unusual "railtrail" has emerged from the water.
