Register for news updates$50K Funding Keeps Mary to Bay Rail Trail Moving
The Mary to Bay Rail Trail in Queensland continues to gather momentum with this month’s announcement of Fraser Coast Regional Council’s $50,000 in funding to extend upgrades along one of the Fraser Coast’s most popular recreational trails.
The funding will enable the Fraser Coast Bicycle Users Group (FCBUG) to upgrade another 2.5km of trail between Bridge 6 and Bridge 4, near Churchill Mine Road. The work is expected to be completed by October 2026.
The investment builds on substantial progress made since 2024, when FCBUG volunteers began transforming the former railway corridor with a compacted decomposed granite surface. This improved all-weather surface addressed previous concerns that sections of the trail were too rough for recreational users and has reduced maintenance following wet weather.
Every kilometre is an extraordinary effort by volunteers, who are contributing thousands of hours to the project. Some FCBUG members devote up to 4 days each week to the project, working many hours a day to maximise the availability of machinery and contractors.
Council has supported the trail through a 3-year funding agreement with FCBUG, while FCBUG and Mary Inc continue to advocate for completion of the full trail linking Maryborough and Hervey Bay before 2030.
