The proposed 45km Port Lincoln to Coffin Bay Rail Trail in South Australia is now more likely to proceed in the longer term thanks to a land agreement with a Port Lincoln landholder.
The Port Lincoln section of the proposed Parnkalla Rail Trail passes through private land, however this week the City of Port Lincoln announced that a significant land agreement has been reached with the landholder. According to Council, “This opens up major opportunities for new growth, recreation, improved connections and long‑term environmental protection for the community.
“Securing the former BHP rail corridor between Greyhound Road and Investigator Road, Tulka, creates a major opportunity for recreation and tourism. The land provides a continuous alignment for Council to connect and extend the Parnkalla Rail Trail by around 11km, linking it with the Investigator Trail and Lincoln National Park. This future connection will create a long-distance coastal trail that supports tourism, outdoor recreation, active lifestyles and improved community connectivity.”
Having secured the land, the City of Port Lincoln will now commence planning for the development of the 16-hectare open space which will include the proposed rail trail. The development of the rail trail has been on hold for several years due to access restrictions associated with the sensitive water catchment area it passes through.
