Construction is moving forward on the 5.7 km extension to Birdwood of South Australia’s iconic Amy Gillett Pathway rail trail which will add considerably to the 16 km shared path from Oakbank to Mount Torrens. The first 2 km of hot-mix asphalt was laid this week and drainage works are nearly complete, with only a 950 m section from Mullers Rd to Birdwood left to finish.
As part of the project, the council is restoring historic stone and concrete culverts along the route, ensuring that the trail’s rich railway history is respected and preserved.
This expansion will provide an incredible recreational experience, allowing users to avoid the path that follows the main road and explore more of the picturesque farmlands of the Adelaide Hills.
Funding from both the federal and state governments ($2.6M each), along with an Adelaide Hills Council contribution of $500,000 brings the total funding for this project to $5.7M.
The new section is expected to be completed by mid-2025.
