On the 8th of November, 2024, the Amy Gillett Bikeway Rail Trail celebrated a significant milestone with the completion of the first 400m of the extension of the trail from Mt Torrens to Birdwood. The extension bridges a 6km gap between the demolished railway stations of Mt Torrens and Birdwood. It will follow the rail line which was constructed in 1918 and removed in 1963.
The Adelaide Hills Council has advised that two new public car parking areas will provide access to the bikeway at Mt Torrens and by the heritage Burford Hills Rail Bridge. Work on the restoration of that bridge is expected to start in December. The 16.5km bikeway will increase to 22.5km following completion of the extension. The final stage of the trail, an 8.5km stretch to Mt Pleasant, will see the Amy Gillett Bikeway Rail Trail reach its maximum length of 32km.
There has been no indication as to when that final stage will be undertaken. Completion of the extension to Birdwood is anticipated in early 2025.
