The newest 5.7 km section of the Amy Gillett Bikeway rail trail was officially opened on 13 November, extending the popular cycling and walking trail from Mount Torrens to Birdwood. Rail Trails Australia’s SA regional reps Mark Draper and Tony Farmilo enjoyed being at the event. An enthusiastic gathering of cyclists and locals joined the Acting Mayor of the Adelaide Hills Council, Nathan Daniell as they led cyclists on the inaugural ride from Mt Torrens to Birdwood.
Stage 4 adds another link to this much-loved route, providing a safe and scenic path for locals and visitors to explore. The extension winds through picturesque farmland and native bushland, offering another opportunity for the community to enjoy the Adelaide Hills by bike or on foot.
The $5.7 million project was made possible through the support of the State and Federal Governments, alongside the dedication of Adelaide Hills Council staff and contractors.
In further good news, the Adelaide Hills Council has called for a report into the feasibility of completing the Birdwood to Randell Road section of the trail while the Barossa Council has secured funding for preliminary works on the construction of the trail from Randell Road to Mt Pleasant. The completion of stage 5, the final stage, of the Amy Gillett Rail Trail may be closer than we think.

Bring on Mt Pleasant extension asap.
Absolutely beautiful trail. Smoother than the roads and the scenery is delightful! Love this form of riding as it's stress free and totally safe. Keep them coming!
