Bass Coast Shire Council has completed important upgrade works on a bridge along the Bass Coast Rail Trail near Dalyston, helping to keep this much-loved community asset safe and accessible for years to come.
The project, which was completed on time, saw the timber deck of the bridge over Powlett River replaced with fibre-reinforced polymer grating, and the supporting structures upgraded.
The bridge has served the community well over many years and these improvements will ensure it continues to provide a safe and reliable connection for walkers, cyclists and visitors enjoying the trail between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi.
The Bass Coast Rail Trail is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, supporting healthy, active lifestyles and connecting our communities. These works will help maintain that experience while also supporting local jobs and contractors.

The rail trail doesn’t connect Phillip Island to Wonthaggi. It runs from Woolamai (near Bass) to Wonthaggi. There is however a connecting bicycle track that does go down to the island.
We’re hoping that the actual rail trail will one day be extended to Nyora to join the Great Southern Rail Trail.
