Register for news updatesBicycle channels have recently been added to steps providing a detour around the Lionel Rose carpark at Kilcunda on the Bass Coast Rail Trail (BCRT). This offers cyclists access to the bypass of the section of trail that was closed in August 2026 due to beach erosion.
The yellow channels enable riders to negotiate the steps with their bicycles. However, significant care must be taken, especially in the steep section at the top of the steps. This detour is best negotiated with a light (road/hybrid) bike, or an e-bike which features a walk-assist mode (as many do).
E-bike riders are advised to familiarise themselves with this function before attempting the detour with their cycle. The e-bike walk-assist function usually provides a speed of 4 to 6 km/hr, does not require any pedal rotation, and is activated by a button on the control pad/handlebars while the rider walks beside it. The cycle’s brakes are used to control the descent.
A more permanent solution to the current erosion-diversion, using a much longer boardwalk, is being planned, but will require permits from different land management agencies, as the route moves away from the original railway alignment.

One comment on “Bass Coast Rail Trail Detour Upgraded for Cyclists”
A clarification regarding walk mode…. Some bikes (perhaps many) with centre- mounted motors DO force the crank to turn when using this mode. Unfortunately, that can be problematic when the ramp is so close to the side posts.
