Register for news updatesBikeSA’s Annual Tour took place in September, covering 600km through the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale – 4 celebrated wine regions. Some 140 participants and volunteers spent 9 days following the carefully-selected route, which involved many South Australian rail trails – detailed below!
Day 1 from Adelaide to Chateau Tanunda joined the Barossa Rail Trail from Lyndoch to Tanunda, a quiet and scenic entrance to the gorgeous Barossa Valley with spring shoots and blossom everywhere in vineyards and orchards.
Day 3 joined the Rattler Trail from Riverton and then part of the Riesling Trail toward Clare, before diverting onto backroads to visit wineries, Mintaro and historic Martindale Hall.
Day 5 headed south on the Riesling Trail to Auburn before traversing backroads through Saddleworth and Kapunda to overnight at Nuriootpa.
Day 6 utilised the Barossa Trail to Angaston then crossed the trail in Tanunda as the route took participants to the western side of the valley to visit icons such as Seppeltsfield and a lunch stop at Maggie Beer’s.
Day 7 headed south on the Barossa Trail and connecting roads to lunch at Birdwood. From here to Oakbank participants experienced the recently extended Amy Gillett Bikeway Rail Trail before an overnight stop in the pretty German town of Hahndorf.
Day 9 followed the Coast to Vines Rail Trail from McLaren Vale to Marino Rocks, then a short section of the Marino Rocks Greenway Rail Trail then westward to the Coast Park Path Rail Trail. After a beachside ride through Brighton, Glenelg and West Beach, the route turned inland to follow the River Torrens Linear Park back to the city.
This route certainly made the most of our best rail trails. Participants expressed great delight at the scenery, safe riding conditions and near perfect cycling weather.

One comment on “BikeSA Annual Tour Uses Rail Trails”
That trip sounds awesome. We'd love to bring our ebikes over from Melbourne and ride some of those trails, but which ones are the best? We'd have about 2-3 weeks, and be travelling with a campervan, so staying at free camps, donation campsites, and caravan parks. As we like doing our own thing, most trails are covered twice, once in each direction, so we end up back at our starting point. We like to travel around 50 to 60klms each day, and rest in between if possible. Any ideas on the logistics to do so would be appreciated. TIA.
