The Victorian state government earmarked it as a “Strategic Cycling Corridor” but the proposal has made only sporadic progress over the years and a 2019 feasibility study by the Department of Transport was not even made public until a Freedom of Information application by local cycling action groups.
In 2023 there was a 1km section built in connection with a level-crossing removal project in Mont Albert and Surrey Hills but a further section that could have been created in Camberwell as part of a major overhaul of that station precinct did not proceed due to overwhelming opposition to the removal of the classic Victorian station.
More recently, the transport department added a raised pedestrian crossing to Auburn Rd near the alignment of a possible route that would take the trail outbound from Hawthorn past Swinburne University and along streets and laneways. It’s a route Bicycle Network described as “well considered and forward thinking” but is not on the northern side of the line as favoured by Boroondara.
The Greenways Plan is open for comment until May 5, 2026.
