The clearing of part of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail (BBIRT), from Barrimoon to Barrimoon Rd, towards Kalpowar, has made this Queensland trail 3km longer!
A further 3km ride on roads (turning right at Barrimoon Rd, right at Kalpowar Rd then left onto Gladstone Monto Rd) takes riders to Kalpowar.
To celebrate, the Grand Hotel Many Peaks offered a free drink to people who had a Strava map to prove they’d ridden the extended middle section.
The work means you can jump on your bike at Kalpowar and, including the above on-road section, ride approx. 52km north through Barrimoon, the Dawes Range tunnels and beautiful Boyne Valley via Many Peaks. Don’t expect a manicured surface on the freshly slashed section, or the rest of the BBIRT, as this remains an adventure trail built largely by volunteers.
Fortunately, the Grand Hotel Many Peaks is conveniently located near the halfway point. This RTA supporter has great food and accommodation, and you’re more than welcome to pop in, whether you’ve done the 52km or not.
*There may still be water at Ridler Creek Bridge at Hellens, between Ubudo and Nagoorin. If there is, riders are advised to detour via Gladstone Monto Rd and jump back on the trail on the other side of the creek.
