Excitement is mounting as bridge works on the Yarra Valley Rail Trail near Yering in Victoria start to take shape. One of the 2 trestle bridges being rebuilt beside the Melba Hwy already has some of its hidden steelwork in place to support the new deck, with those works expected to be completed in April. Tendering is underway for the next 1 km section across the floodplain of the Yarra River, after which a major new bridge will be needed to reach Yarra Glen.
People who’ve seen the current bridge works from the highway and are now wandering around in circles waiting for this 1.2 km up-and-back stage of the mammoth project to open, can ride or walk 9 km of the Northern Loop Trail shared path from Yarra Glen. Designed to provide additional activities for visitors enjoying the Yarra Valley Trail, the Northern Loop has already been completed in the Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve, with improvements to an existing path and interpretative signage, to the spot where a bridge across Steel Creek will be needed before the trail can go the 3.8 km to Tarrawarra as a rail-side path.
Heading the opposite way from the recreation reserve, the Northern Loop Trail goes under the Melba Hwy, up King St in Yarra Glen, along an improved shared path beside Steel Creek Rd and then down the latest section of path beside Gulf Rd, where there’s another bridge going over Steel Creek in the next few months. In the meantime you can divert to the road bridge. The trail works are currently passing Balgownie Estate and Endota Spa, which will make an indulgent stop for trail users. The section along the highway back to Yarra Glen is still to be finalised.
