Meanwhile, there are no surprises in the Peninsula Trails’ preferred route from Bittern to the Red Hill Rail Trail. The proposed alignment from Bittern will run alongside Frankston-Flinders Rd, close to the former branch line’s route, for the first 6km to Balnarring, where a pine-treed playground now occupies the station site. It will halve the existing distance via the Western Port Bay Trail, when completed in the next five to 10 years. From there, the remaining 4km to the base of the Red Hill Rail Trail at Merricks stays on the southern side of Frankston-Flinders Rd with a pleasant little detour on the former road alignment to Hanns Creek Reserve. Beyond a community wetlands at Balnarring, the railway corridor to Merricks is in private hands. There are four remaining community consultations organised by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council covering all 11 missing links in the 170km Peninsula Trails project, with comments for Mornington-Moorooduc accepted online until January 31 here. Rail Trails Australia has written to the council expressing its concern over the latest setback in a prolonged planning process for the Mornington trail.
