Register for news updatesCommunity Invited to Derwent Valley Rail Trail Workshops
Derwent Valley Council in Tasmania is inviting community members to attend Derwent Valley Rail Trail workshops in July as part of the feasibility study and early design work for the proposed shared-use trail. A Community Advisory Group was established in early 2025 for the potential rail trail, which connects with popular mountain bike park town Maydena.
The study builds on extensive engagement undertaken through the Upper Derwent Valley Precinct Plan. The rail trail was identified in the Plan as the catalyst project, reflecting community priorities established through that engagement. Council unanimously endorsed the project for further investigation, funded by the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP).
The current study is testing how a shared-use trail can deliver benefits while responding to the corridor’s technical, environmental, safety and cost constraints. The scope is within the disused rail corridor between Hayes and Maydena.
