Bass Coast Shire Council (BCSC) has closed a section of Victoria’s Bass Coast Rail Trail due to erosion concerns.
The council’s press release says the section of trail impacted is behind the Lionel Rose carpark between the Kilcunda Cemetery and the Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge.
“This stretch of coastline has been experiencing significant erosion for some time,” the release states. “In December last year, the beach access at this same location was closed and temporary fencing erected because of erosion. Recent weather conditions has accelerated the erosion with a further 2 metres of the dune being washed away. As a result, the edge of the trail is now significantly closer to the erosion point.”
A planned detour is suitable for pedestrians only. “Other trail users will need to turn around at the closure point,” says BCSC.
Marcel Van den Bronk, President of the Kilcunda Community Association (KCA), reports that they have been lobbying both the BCSC and Parks Victoria regarding erosion issues for several years.
“We have been concerned about the dune erosion and the risk to our iconic rail trail. Unfortunately, neither BCSC nor Parks Victoria have been able to develop a suitable solution,” said Marcel.
Rail Trails Australia joins with KCA in advocating for a speedy resolution. We seek the reopening of this trail which is an asset for the many community members and tourists that use this trail. You can write to BCSC requesting an urgent solution here.
