On the 3 September 2024 the Detailed Design and costing for the Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail (part of the Bethania to Beaudesert Rail Trail in Queensland) was presented to the City of Logan Council Infrastructure Committee. The Detailed Design was confirmed and the anticipated cost, adjusted to $15.5M, was approved. The report was later presented to a full Council Meeting where it was again supported by a majority of Councillors. This project will be co-funded 50:50 by The City of Logan, a Local Government Area (LGA), and the Queensland State Government through the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
The City of Logan is a rapidly expanding LGA located south of Greater Brisbane, with 70 suburbs and a population of around 350 000. This project will repurpose 11.5km of the disused 43km rail corridor between Bethania (a Logan suburb) and Beaudesert which is in another LGA. The project has been many years in development with extensive community engagement. The Bethania to Logan Village trail will be constructed to a very high standard to provide an all weather Active Transport route for residents, and to connect to the existing 3.5km Logan Village to Yarrabilba Rail Trail which was opened in 2021. When constructed it will be a ‘showcase’ rail trail.
TMR contractors have already cleared the rail easement of vegetation, rails and sleepers and the Logan community is eagerly awaiting construction of the trail which is now due to commence in 2025. Advocacy to extend the rail trail all the way through to Beaudesert is ongoing.
