With Victoria heading towards an election, the City of Greater Dandenong is pushing for state government funding to complete the Djerring rail trail to Dandenong. The city has joined an alliance of outer-eastern Melbourne councils wanting better transport connections, with $8 million being sought to extend the Djerring Trail, which runs along the Pakenham line, about 2km from Yarraman to the Dandenong CBD.
Bicycle Network, which is advocating for the work, says: “The rail trail provides a safe and easy-to-ride cycling route along a major transport corridor and connects multiple activity centres.” 
Currently the route to Dandenong is unmarked and on busy roads. A further 4km connection is needed to the Hallam Valley railside trail along the same line, none of which was built as part of the Hallam Station level-crossing removal project.
Eastern Transport Coalition member City of Monash is seeking a pledge of $2.5 million to upgrade 2 remaining sections of the Djerring Trail, from Oakleigh to Huntingdale (above) and Huntingdale to Clayton, which pre-date the state’s Level Crossing Removal Program. Monash has already been hard at work constructing a two-way cycleway in Oakleigh from the Djerring Trail to Scotchmans Creek, which will provide a link to the emerging Waverley Rail Trail that the council is completing 5km away. It has committed $1.9 million from its 2026-27 budget to complete the cycleway through the Atkinson St/Atherton Rd/Hanover St intersection and north 300m along Atkinson St from Dandenong Rd to Scotchmans Creek. The Dandenong Rd (Princes Hwy) intersection design will require approval from the Department of Transport and Planning.
