In good news, the recently-completed 30 km southern section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) from Lismore to Casino was left unscathed by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, and local businesses would like rail trail users back.
While Lismore copped a huge dose of rain, according to NRRT treasurer Marie Lawton the surface (hard-packed blue metal road base) is good. “It hasn’t eroded or flooded, it didn’t get as much rain as they thought,” she reports.
Further north, the 24 km section between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek reopened on 15 March with some hazards still present. This Tweed section, which has a fair amount of tree canopy, received damage from falling trees.
According to NRRT’s website (www.northernriversrailtrail.com.au), hazards remain along that section, including debris, uneven surfaces and slippery conditions, and users need to be cautious.
Reports indicate that Queensland’s Brisbane Valley Rail Trail escaped the worst of it too, however Craig England, Manager (Rail Corridor Management) issued a valuable reminder that: “If it’s flooded – forget it”.
