Over recent years, Victoria’s state government has removed 20 level crossings on the line using rail trenches and bridges, built 17 new stations and created an almost continuous shared path in the railway reserve.
The trail through the bayside suburb of Parkdale was completed in May, with two level crossings removed, an elevated station built and the shared path extended south. Originally level crossings were going to be retained at Highett, Mordialloc/Aspendale and Seaford but, in 2022, the state government undertook to get rid of the remaining nine on that line.
The first of those additional projects, covering Mordialloc and Aspendale, is now underway but the works do not extend to an 800m gap of shared path from Parkdale to Mordialloc, where the next section of trail and elevated station on the line is due to open in 2026.
Bicycle Network Victoria and local councils argued for a shared bridge over the busy Nepean Hwy next to the railway one, where there is space for another span, but the Level Crossing Removal Authority would not touch it. A shared bridge may still happen but, given Victoria’s ballooning state debt, we can only hope that the local Kingston council will come up with a cheaper solution in the meantime.
The Highett and Seaford sections are still in the planning stages but Highett is also likely to be missing a section of trail when work is completed in 2029.
