Goodwood Station cyclist overpass scrapped
The proposed Goodwood shared-use overpass, which would have ensured Adelaide cyclists and pedestrians could safely travel over the Goodwood Railway Station and rail infrastructure, has been scrapped due to an unacceptable impact on trees within an adjacent reserve. The State Government has decided that the Mike Turtur Rail Trail will continue to use the underpass beneath the station (and cyclists will still be required to walk their bikes through). The underpass and access ramps will be improved with new lighting, mirrors, CCTV, drainage upgrades, resurfacing and painting. While this work is welcome, the underpass will remain a slow, difficult and unsafe option compared to the proposed overpass and it’s extremely disappointing to see that Adelaide’s most used rail trail has again missed out on major infrastructure work while another nearby one gets some.
The Marino Rocks Rail Trail crosses the same area and, while it does not use the Goodwood underpass, it does have to negotiate narrow archways beneath an adjacent tram overpass. Improvements announced by the SA government include the widening of the archways to 5.5m, which will significantly improve cyclist and pedestrian safety.
