The District Council of Mount Remarkable will match the South Australian Governments Opens Space and Places for People Grant of $100,000 toward the expansion of the Southern Flinders Ranges Rail Trail from Melrose to Booleroo Centre. The project funds of $200,000 will be used to construct 17 kilometers of new path from Melrose to Booleroo Centre.
The Wilmington rail line, from Gladstone to Wilmington, will ultimately become a rail trail of 88 kilometers in length. On completion of the Melrose to Booleroo Centre section of the rail trail, 51 kilometers of the 88 kilometers will have been constructed.
The Rail Trail will further enhance the reputation of the Town of Melrose which is recognised as the centre of mountain bike tourism in the Southern Flinders Ranges and is extending its reputation as an international level mountain biking destination. The rail Trail will also link with the well established Heyson walking trail and the Mawson cycling trail as well as providing substantial community benefit by linking the towns of Wilmington, Melrose and Booleroo Centre and ultimately, the towns of Wirrabara, Stone Hut, Laura and Gladstone.
Construction will commence in December 2020 and is expected to be completed in August 2021.
