An important step towards the potential 16km extension of the existing 10km-long Grampians Rail Trail in Victoria has been achieved through the positive collaboration between Friends of Grampians Rail Trail and Northern Grampians Shire Council (NGSC).
A report was presented to the NGSC on Tuesday 23 June to recommend that they provide a letter of support for the Friends of Grampians Rail Trail for their grant submission for the Western Renewables Link – Local Grants Fund (2026) application with a commitment to provide ongoing maintenance budget contribution only towards Council’s assets along the trail.
The NGSC resolved to provide a letter of support for the application, with a commitment to underwriting maintenance costs of the entire trail of up to the value of $20,000 annually from June 2028.
The Friends of Grampians Rail Trail will continue to raise funds through donations and sponsorship to maintain the trail.

I recently rode the GRT and what a surprise. Such a varied environment, from open country, to forest and wetlands. Really good information signage. Very much hope the extension goes ahead. A weather change prevented me adding on the option of the road based ride from Halls Gap to the Mt Bradenton Road trailhead. Also the path based ride through Halls Gap to Lake Bellfield is just the ticket if staying in Halls Gap.
Rail trails have opened up safe, fun and healthy holiday experiences for hubby and me. It’s a beautiful way to see our amazing country
