Right now is a vital stage in the exciting push for New England Rail Trail to become a reality – and RTA and the Friends of NERT are asking for your help!
The 210 km Great Northern Rail Line opened in 1888 and once extended to the Queensland border, but has been disused for more than 3 decades.
Chief Officer Planning and Activation of Armidale Regional Council, Daniel Boyce, said preliminary study work is currently underway along the rail corridor as part of the Rail Trail Framework [required in New South Wales]. “Community input is essential and will directly shape the project,” Mr Boyce said.

Please email Armidale Regional Council co*****@**************ov.au by 31 May. Use the subject line “I Support the New England Rail Trail”, include your name and address in the body of the email, and let council know that you will come and ride, walk or run this rail trail when it’s completed.
As Greg Wild, Chair Friends of New England Rail Trail says: “Tourism is one of the corner stones of the rail trail business case, so support from people outside our region is more than relevant, and just as important.”
