Register for news updatesHilltops Council Progresses Plans for Rail Trail
Hilltops Council has established a rail trail oversight committee to progress plans for the Boorowa – Galong Rail Trail (BGRT) in NSW. The proposed rail trail will traverse a 29 km route along the disused Galong to Boorowa branch line that operated from 1914 to 1987.
BGRT Inc volunteer committee was formed in July 2021 and raised $45,000 for a feasibility study. This was completed in November 2022 and concluded that the annual benefit to the local economy would be in the order of $2.9 million. A Rail Trail Development Plan was completed in March, 2024, and BGRT Inc has also commissioned a Biosecurity Report which is nearing completion.
The BGRT Inc committee has prepared an application for a Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP) grant from the federal government to construct the trail, pending Hilltops Council acquiring the necessary approvals from NSW Transport for a 30-year lease on the rail corridor.
The BGRT Inc volunteer committee is leading the way in attempting to get a lease on their rail trail corridor from Transport for NSW (on behalf of Transport Asset Holding Entity of NSW and applying for funding.
