Rail Trails Australia regional representatives Jenny Mustey (Northern Victoria) and Geoff Barby (Western Victoria) recently headed to Stawell to attend the Friends of the Grampians Rail Committee general meeting.
Long-standing advocate of the Grampians Rail Trail John Pye, who has been instrumental in developing the current trail, invited the reps to come along to talk to members of this relatively new committee. Northern Grampians Council representatives also attended the meeting. Friends of the Grampians Rail Trail are keen to see the 15km extension of the trail. It was a positive conversation between members and council representatives, and it is hoped that they continue to work well together to make the vision a reality in the future.
Jenny and Geoff shared many of the innovative initiatives that are happening by other Friends and volunteer groups to improve and help shape rail trails across Central, Northern and Western Victoria. They also talked about funding opportunities and the practical aspects of constructing, maintaining and managing rail trails.
As rep Jenny says of the possible 15km extension of the trail: “How amazing this ride would be – it would have the best views of the magnificent escarpment of the Grampians and then links to Halls Gap which already has fabulous shared paths to explore!”
