Register for news updatesJetty Restoration to Revitalise Carnarvon’s Rail Trail Heritage
Works are underway to restore up to 200 metres of Carnarvon’s iconic One Mile Jetty, reinvigorating one of Western Australia’s lesser‑known rail trails and strengthening the town’s unique rail and maritime heritage connection.
Backed by a $4.5 million state government investment, the project aims to restore partial public access to the heritage‑listed jetty. The restored structure will reflect the jetty’s original form and serve as the centrepiece of the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct.
For rail trail users, the project has special significance. The 3 km Carnarvon Tramway follows the historic tramway alignment from the town centre to One Mile Jetty. The jetty makes up most of the original tramway, extending the rail corridor out over the ocean. Built in 1897, the jetty and tramway once worked together to load regional produce directly onto ships, forming a vital transport link for the Gascoyne.
Together, the Carnarvon Tramway Rail Trail and the restored One Mile Jetty tell a unique WA story of rail meeting sea, offering visitors an immersive transport heritage experience.
