Blue Mountains City Council is asking for public support and government investment to recommission the Lapstone Hill Tunnel in the lower Blue Mountains. Reopening this iconic 634m tunnel would provide an active transport link between western Sydney and Glenbrook. This would improve safety for cyclists and walkers, assist local businesses and give permanent public access to a unique space.
Lapstone Hill Tunnel was opened in 1892 as a key section of the railway over the Blue Mountains, enabling the steep Lapstone Zig Zag to be by-passed. Despite its engineering brilliance, the route was still too steep for trains and was replaced in 1913 by the current alignment up Glenbrook Gorge.
The council has already undertaken considerable planning, remediation and activation work to support a reopening of this key piece of heritage infrastructure. A number of open days at the tunnel have been held to demonstrate its long-term potential, most recently in late July and early August, which attracted thousands of residents and visitors.
