Campaspe Shire Council recently awarded Northern Construction Group the contract to build approximately 10km of gravel cycling trail, from the Bendigo-Murchison Road crossing to Channel Inlet Road. Included in the works are also repairs to six VicTrack bridges, path drainage, culvert and safety barrier installations and signage along the Waranga (Murchsion to Rushworth) Rail Trail.
It is anticipated that works will commence this month and the project completion date is April 2025. This is an incredibly exciting step and it will be a wonderful 19km rail trail to ride connecting the townships of Murchison (Greater Shepparton City Council) and Rushworth (Campaspe Shire Council), both with great cafes, bakeries and interesting shops to visit. The nearby Whroo Forest and old mining area is also a hidden gem with many tracks to investigate. Murchison is on the Goulburn River and is close to wineries and the Goulburn Weir.
The Waranga Rail trail will be a reasonably flat and scenic ride, particularly where it crosses over the Waranga Basin as per the artist impression depicted below.
Earthworks Civil & Construction are working towards having the 2km asphalt path section at the Rushworth end completed soon. These works have been paused to allow for critical strengthening processes to be completed.
