A $4 million upgrade to the Rokeby to Crossover Rail Trail, with dramatic improvements on the shared-path section to Neerim, officially opened last month.
The trail, 100km east of Melbourne, includes 5.3km of rail trail between Rokeby and Crossover and another 12km of railside trail to Neerim. The upgraded surfaces provide a major improvement for users, replacing some sections which were unsuitable for the increased traffic on this popular trail.
From Crossover, the trail has a mix of concrete and gravel surfaces and uses the Neerim Rd reserve heading north beyond the Apex Lookout at Neerim, providing a total trail distance of 17km.
The $4 million upgrade was wide in scope – covering surfacing, drainage, trail and wayfinding signs, car parking and other features. The funding included $3 million from the Victorian State Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund, and the Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing, officially opened what is now called the Rokeby to Neerim Trail.
Although the section north of Crossover no longer follows the railway alignment as the land was sold, the vistas from the road reserve make the trip very enjoyable and the train route is still clearly visible in places.
Phase 2 of the project involves extending the trail to Noojee, with its striking historic trestle bridge. Baw Baw Shire Council is continuing to seek funding for this.
