Register for news updatesThe 5km Mary Valley Rail Trail (MVRT) in Queensland will be extended 500m into the centre of the pretty village of Imbil. Gympie Regional Council (GRC), the trail manager of the MVRT, announced that it had secured $600,000 of state government funding for rail trail upgrades in its local government area. Whilst most of the funding will be directed towards the Kilkivan Kingaroy Rail Trail, a portion will be used this financial year to bring the MVRT into the centre of town.
According to MVRT Association president Craig Thompson: “This might not seem like a significant amount, but this project will really increase the visibility and accessibility of the trail by a big factor. The trailhead will then be right in the middle of Imbil, directly across the street from the Railway Hotel and other businesses in the main street. It’s a big step forward.”
The MVRT Association is active in promoting their trail and conducts regular tree planting and maintenance on the open section. The trail is just a short drive from the Sunshine Coast into the scenic Mary Valley.
Gympie Regional Council is very positive about repurposing the disused rail corridor north from Imbil towards Gympie. The 13km corridor from Imbil to the town of Amamoor is presently at a ‘detailed design phase’ at GRC for rail trail development.
