Etheredge Mintern Pty Ltd are the main contractor for this high-standard Monash City Council project, which includes indented car parking bays, vehicle crossings, drainage works and kerbing realignment. “This project demonstrates council’s ongoing commitment to connect the bicycle and pedestrian networks with infrastructure that is safe, continuous and direct to take people to those destinations they want to go to,” a spokesperson said.
At nearby Heathmont, where the rail trail switches to the western side of the Belgrave Line, Transport Victoria is widening the Canterbury Rd bridge footpath into a shared one, with an improved shared crossing to match.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Transport Coalition of councils is seeking state-election pledges to fix the unsafe route through the Ferntree Gully Railway Station carpark ($350,000), the abbreviated asphalt path through Upper Ferntree Gully ($400,000) and the narrow section of rail trail through Upwey, which will require major investment to meet Metro requirements ($1.6 million).
The improvements will provide better access to the iconic Dandenong Ranges National Park plus numerous bike paths and bush walks away from the Belgrave and Puffing Billy lines.
