Waranga Rail Trail Developments
The bridge over the Stuart Murray Canal on the Waranga (Murchison – Rushworth) Rail Trail, near Murchison in northern Victoria, is back in business after Greater Shepparton City Council carried out essential repairs in May and June. The works have restored the timber piles, which had suffered significant deterioration, to ensure the historical bridge can be enjoyed for many years to come. The canal was constructed in the 1890s and is an essential component of the region’s productive irrigation system.
Campaspe Shire Council is currently constructing the rest of the rail trail to Murchison. A 2km asphalt section in Rushworth will be completed in September, 2024, after rectification and path drainage work. It is evident when visiting Rushworth that it is preparing for the potential of more visitors due to the rail trail extension. New businesses have opened including cafes, homewares and clothing stores full of plans on how best to welcome and provide for the riders to the area when the trail is completed. Exciting times ahead for this picturesque and historic town in Campaspe Shire.

For those interested, the Stuart Murray Canal bridge works included:
- Timber pile repairs including pile ‘wrap and pour’, and splicing new timber sections into existing
- Supplying and replacing timber crossheads, bolts and fixtures
- Applying timber preservation treatments and associated works
