On Friday 19 June 2026 a new shared path connecting the Bass Coast Rail Trail to Inverloch was officially opened with a group bike ride and walk to a ceremony midway along the path.
Steady light rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the estimated 600 participants made up of school groups, officials and other interested parties as they traversed the attractive countryside between Wonthaggi and Inverloch.
While the Bass Coast railhead was primarily supporting the state coal mine at Wonthaggi (and the rail did not progress east from that town), the extension of the path to Inverloch adds a very enjoyable 14km to the trail as it heads toward Waratah Bay and Wilsons Promontory.
The impressive extension was made possible through $3 million from the Victorian Government Growing Suburbs Fund and $4.7 million from Bass Coast Shire.
The organisers of the event generously provided a sausage sizzle, which proved very popular in the conditions! Celebrations at the half-way lunch were well attended and led by Bass Coast Shire CEO Greg Box.
The trail is a mix of concrete, gravel and boardwalk surfaces with easy grades suitable for cyclists and walkers of all abilities. The 14km (one way) trail is abundant with local wildlife, including birds, lace monitors, wombats, kangaroos and koalas.
