The North East Tasmania Rail Trail User Experience Survey has confirmed that the trail is one of the region’s most valued recreational and tourism assets.
Conducted by the Rotary Club of Scottsdale over a month between April and May 2026, the online survey gathered 120+ responses.
A standout finding was the important role cycle tourism now plays in the region. Over half of respondents were visitors to Dorset, with 85% of visiting users identifying as bicycle riders, including e-bike riders.
While visitors are largely drawn by cycling opportunities, locals identified that walking, running, recreation and exercise featured strongly, with nearly one third of local users accessing the trail weekly.
The survey found the trail currently has strong appeal among older users, with around two thirds of respondents aged over 55. This suggests the trail is succeeding as an accessible, low impact recreation space, though it also highlights opportunities to better engage younger riders, families and school-aged users in the future.
The survey showed that people value these spaces deeply, for recreation, health, connection, tourism and regional economic development, and they want to see them continue to grow.
