To bring some media focus to the issue of extending Northern Territory rail trails, the Friends of the North Australia Railway are conducting two walks along the old NAR during the National Trust’s Heritage Week in June:
1. Rail Trail Walk at Katherine. Saturday 9 June 2007. From Stuart Estate (5km north of Katherine) walk along the 1917 formation of the legendary North Australia Railway. Pass interesting geological formations that the railway surveyors skirted and pass through the historic location of Emungalen (the original Katherine). Assemble at the 1926 Railway Station in Railway Terrace Katherine at 0800 for shuttles out to Stuart Estate. This guided walk will start at 0830. Wear robust walking shoes, hat and carry a water bottle. Anticipated duration 2 hours.
2. Rail Trail Walk in Darwin. Monday 11 June 2007. From Wallaby Holtze Road at Yarrawonga at Palmerston through Mitchell Creek (5 span bridge from 1887) to Howard Springs and McMinns Siding at Girraween Road. Explore the route of the future extension of the Rail Trail / Bike Path that presently ends at Tulagi Road. Walk through hand excavated cuttings (see the pick marks) and across viaducts built by “coolies” 120 years ago in 1887. This guided walk will start at 0830. Wear robust walking shoes, hat and carry a water bottle. Anticipated duration 3 hours.

The existing hotmix rail trail follows the original 1888 North Australia Railway route for about 12 miles (20km) out of Darwin to the Yarrawonga Industrial Estate adjacent to Palmerston.
In recent times we have restored a 700m section of the original track at The Narrows in Darwin and are re-sleepering the old bridge (with assistance from Darwin City Council). The Rail Trail runs alongside this historic section.
